Despite numerous efforts, creating connections to flat files keeps on failing with status "Error Crawling". I am lost at the moment, where am I making the mistake?

I would check connection settings in this case. One common mistake in this case is, users have files on their local workstation and services can't read the files from local workstation. 

Make sure that the A2B Data services have access to read files. If there is a common UNC folder set-up in your organization, we recommend placing files in the UNC path and make sure that services have access to read files.
